INTEGRAL UFOLOGY

Integral UFOlogy is the application of Ken Wilber's Integral Theory to the study of UFOs. First developed by Omaha UFO Study Group President Steve Snodgrass in October, 2010, this ongoing project consists of a series of white papers and symposium presentations published on YouTube. Explore the application of this theory here and converse with Steve in his blog section on this website.

White Papers

1 / A Report on Ancient Aliens: Psychic Phenomena and a Suggested (Phenomenological) Approach to UFOlogy

Date: January 1, 2010

An examination of perspective-taking as applied to the study of paraconceptual phenomena.  This paper lays the foundation for a genuine scientific approach that goes beyond the gauntlet of empirical scientific inquiry, extending equal importance to individual and social constructs that act as mental "noise" that alters lenses through which UFO/ET contact is examined.

2 / Phoning Home: UFOlogy and the Evolution of Consciousness

Date: May 25, 2010

Four hypotheses are examined to explain current evidence for UFO/ET contact: objective, subjective, inter-objective and inter-subjective. Truth, truthfulness, functional fit and meaning provide for more reliable conclusions to be drawn.  A review of states and stages of consciousness is provided to address these four types of validity claims.

3 / Integral UFOlogyA Rubric for Evaluating Extraterrestrial Contact

Date: October 28, 2010

A system of perspective making and perspective taking is used to organize subjective reports alongside observations in nature that forms the basis of Integral UFOlogy. This 8-step approach to investigation seeks to understand the UFO/ET phenomenon from self, culture and nature perspectives, enabling investigators to more efficiently rule out explainable reports while addressing the 5% of unexplained cases with improved methods of scrutiny.

4 / The Case of John Foster: A Preliminary Evaluation using the Principles of Integral UFOlogy, Part I.

Date: December 7, 2010

Appendix A of this paper lists the items included in a reporting format that meets analytical categories of Integral UFOlogy: a biographical sketch of the investigator; case summary; 8 perspective narratives; conclusion and findings. A report of a triangular craft sighting investigated by Nebraska MUFON is offered as an example of what a report to the MUFON Case Management System or National UFO Reporting Center would look like.

5 / The Case of John Foster: A Preliminary Evaluation using the Principles of Integral UFOlogy, Part II

Date: January 21, 2011

Detailed overview of a single case report by John Foster using the rationale and principles of Integral UFOlogy.  The case examined is a complex experience in the Summer of 1975 to Dillon Lake in central Colorado.

Presentations

6 Spirit of UFOlogy.png

Application of Ken Wilber's AQAL model to the UFO/UAP phenomenon across four dimensions, bridging subjective witness experiences with objective physical data, cultural impact and systemic corroboration.  This trans-disciplinary approach posits that the UFO/ET phenomenon is intimately linked to human consciousness, acting as a catalyst for evolutionary growth. Recommendations for the MUFON case management system are provided to enable efficiency and improved scrutiny.

2 / The UFO/ET Hypothesis: Pseudoscience or Plausible?

December 21, 2012
Runtime: 0:37:26

A presentation focusing on the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) by intersecting consciousness studies, metaphysical idealism, physics, evolutionary biology and cosmology research. The scientific method and logical inference are discussed to argue indirect, supportive and circumstantial evidence for the ETH is plausible because of "9 things we know".

3 / The End of UFOlogy

March 16, 2013
Runtime: 0:43:50

Traditional UFO research has failed.  Dark matter, dark energy and inflation physics act as 21st Century phlogiston. This presentation advocates for a shift toward studying the phenomenon through consciousness and human experience and a new physics.  The field has become a secular religion which calls for abandoning the search for physical, government-disclosed evidence in favor of understanding the nature of the observer, but without new age "manifesting".

4 / Truth About UFOlogy: When has the truth made anyone happy?

Date: March 14, 2014
Runtime: 0:35:12

Relying on traditional physical evidence is outdated for understanding the UFO/ET phenomenon.  This presentation proposes a shift toward analyzing experiencers such as those of John Foster.  The phenomenon may be projections or introjections of consciousness rather than physical craft. Examples from neuroscience and the human connectome suggest science and mysticism approaches to UFO/ET are both fetishistic, but share in common an unorthodox approach.

5 / Alien Ontology

Date: July 27, 2015
Runtime: 0:40:38

This presentation suggests a metaphor of viruses provides intriguing (if not confusing) explanatory power for both the interdimensional hypothesis (IDH) and extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) of non-human intelligent "visitors". Under a framework of Alfred North Whitehead's Process Philosophy, it accounts for high strangeness, loss of self, the dual aspect nature of experiences, and changing historiography while also accounting for the paranormal (ghosts, spirits, angels).

6 / Spirit of UFOlogy

Date: August 2, 2016
Runtime: 0:37:16

Rather than appeals to authority from "true believers" who deny experiences outright and "enthusiasts" who take no critical eye, this presentation advocates an attitude of wonder and skepticism that fuels science and supports mysticism. UFO/ET experiences should be examined in the context of findings from modern physics and neuroscience (such as Michael Graziano's Attention Schema Theory (AST) in a way that triangulates truth.

Perhaps UFO craft are beings, entities themselves capable of expression in the four quadrants of Integral Theory. Roger Penrose's Conformal Cyclic Cosmology, Twistor Theory and the "three worlds, three mysteries" illustration builds the basis for a unified field theory of UFO/UAP craft. The Higgs boson/field and Jeremy England's work on dissipating heat energy are examined in light of Dan Siegel's definition of mind to arrive at a definition of UFOs as complex systems of mind. This approach is presented as testable, predictive, and falsifiable.

8 / Striking UFOlogy

Date: April 15, 2019
Runtime: 0:30:06

As a significant departure, this presentation first debuted in 2018 at the first annual Omaha Haunticon (by request for something "unusual and strange"). Could ancient aliens explain the striking parallel development of religion, philosophy, science and morality in the short time span known as the axial age? Four strikes are proposed: by revelation of Emanuel Swedenborg, interpretation by Zechariah Sitchin, by channeling the "Law of One" material and by readings of Edgar Cayce. I tossed in some secret space program stuff here, just for fun.

9 / UFOlogy Explained

Date: April 15, 2019
Runtime: 0:50:45

This inference to the best explanation (logical abduction) of UFO/ET encounters answers questions like "What happened to you?", "What does it mean?". This explanation of the causes, consequences and context of UFO/ET encounters does not explain them away and avoids a non-explanation. Donald Hoffman, Tony Robbins, Jordan Peterson, Jacques Vallee, David Hume and Dennis Miller assist in preparing the viewer for a Top 10 list of apocalyptic concrescences that stretch the imagination

10 / Why UFOlogy?: The Case of John Foster

Date: March, 2024
Runtime: 01:44:46

Beginning in 1986, John Foster, an engineer and father of three, starts to recall of flood of UFO/ET experiences (~3,000 catalogued) that occurred throughout his lifetime. Three of Foster's experiences are shared in depth, interspersed with scientific studies to support the veracity of Foster's experiences (3rd person perspective full body illusion, research on the extended mind, perception, memory, ownership, visual processing.) Live presentation with Q&A.
